Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at CMC

Our Commitment

Our residency program is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive and equitable learning environment.  Physicians have to be culturally competent to provide high-quality care to patients, and the clear path to cultural competence is to take part in collaborative learning with a team composed of multiple perspectives.

We understand that diversity is critical to both the educational experience and workforce environment, and we are seeking to increase the recruitment and retention of internal medicine physicians from underrepresented minority groups to reflect the members of the diverse community that we serve.

We work to create a safe space for all of our residents, and encourage residents to create a safe and inclusive space for their patients.  Our curricula has included topics ranging from microaggressions and care of the LGBTQ patient;  we address health disparities routinely in our Ambulatory Clinic and work with an integrated Behavioral Health team to support our patients.

Our partnership with the Cornell Center for Health Equity allows our resident to participate in community outreach projects that address social determinants of health. All our residents rotate through REACH Medical, a harm-reduction medical practice where residents learn to provide service using a non-traditional model.

The residency program is working together with the DEI chief Herb Alexander to be catalysts of change for our hospital culture. We hope to train our residents in an inclusive climate, educate our residents to improve interactions and decrease disparities for patients, provide residents with avenues to become advocates for our community, and ultimately promote long-overdue change to our medical system.
